A Travellerspoint blog

May 6 to May 9 2011 - Southwold

Southwold, Suffolk

sunny 21 °C

Four glorious, sunny days in the wonderful seaside village of Southwold in Suffolk. Lots of cafes, galleries, beach huts and pubs (Adnams Brewery is based here). There is also a really well restored and revived pleasure pier. We met Steve and Carole at their friend's house in Southwold on Friday afternoon and then spent for next 3 days mainly walking around the area:

Dunwich Village which started falling into the sea over a seven hundred years ago

Dunwich Heath with lovely views of Sizewell Nuclear Power Station

Took the rowing-boat ferry from Southwold Harbour to Walberswick

Walked up and down the prom, prom, prom

Spent a lovely afternoon at their friend's beach hut

Watched Steve eat some unspeakable whelks

May 4 2011 - Gold Coast to Cockfield

Gold Coast Airport to Sydney Airport to Heathrow Airport to Cockfield in Suffolk

overcast 17 °C

Only 3 1/2 months back in Byron Bay and we're off again. Thanks for the lift Dee

I really shouldn't start the blog with negative comments, but I will! How do Macquarie Airports/Sydney Airport justify their terminal transfer charges - $5.50 one-way by bus or $5.00 one-way by train? And it seems that almost no-one running the food outlets knows that vegetarians occasionally travel. We had a real problem finding anything to eat and what was available was ridiculously expensive; Santos wanted $7.90 for an egg sandwich (we paid GBP1.50 for the same thing from M&S at Heathrow). I think we'll fly out of Brisbane Airport from now on

The flight on the Qantas A380 was fine and the staff were very good but after not flying Qantas for several years, we were amazed how poor their vegetarian meals still are (couscous and rice in one meal!). I have to say that flying with Singapore Airlines A380 is much better - there seems to be more room and the food is much better

On arrival we picked up a car at Hertz who for some reason are really, really competetive this year with a price of GBP 109 per week. We had been dreading the 8am drive around the M25 but it was very easy with only the occasional slow-down

On Friday afternoon we're driving across Suffolk to meet Steve and Carole in Southwold for a long-weekend stay just around the corner from the Adnams Brewery
